Mountain biking - hiking and biking trail information with pictures

Mountain biking in the Black Hills

Mountain biking in the Black Hills needs a sturdy off-road bicycle with wide tires. One thing is for sure when it comes to mountain biking, it does not need to take place on a mountain, hills will work just fine. Out of the two weeks we were in South Dakota we rode our mountain bikes for six days.

Kelly was determined to get me in some bumpy downhill shots. If you want to look great and stay cool and dry then check out Primal Wears eclectic line up of awesome artistic functional bike wear.

There are two ways to cross a stream, here is one way...

and here is the wetter way. I wasn't secure about carrying my bike on my shoulders while balancing on an insecure log to get to the other side.

Picture of Jason riding down a large hill
We cruised down this rolling hill for 3/4 of a mile all through deep grass. This was fun and fast and memorable.

Picture of Centinneal bike trail through cow pastures
We shared the Centennial hiking/biking path with it's residents. You certain spots along the trail you had to open and close a gate so the livestock couldn't escape.

Picture of Jason being chased by a buffalo at Bear Butte Park
Here is Jason sprinting as fast as he can because this young bull buffalo is charging at him full blast. The bison didn't stop until he was right up against the barbed wire fence at which point he reared up on two legs as if he was going jump over. We have no doubt that he could have if he really felt threatened to.
